On Tuesday, Dr. Phillip Ballinger, Director of Undergraduate Admission at UW announced that the admissions office was adopting a new policy that would affect students applying this year. Beginning this fall, UW will adopt a "pooling" admissions process which means that they will no longer have a rolling admission deadline. In layman's terms – they now have an official deadline for freshmen applications (Honors Program included) - December 15, 2010. Students may submit the application as early as October 1st. Applicants will be notified of their admission status between March 15 and March 31, 2011.

And the changes will keep coming - for applicants to the freshmen class of 2012, the Office of Admissions expects to move the application deadline up two weeks, to December 1, 2011.

While this may seem like big news, in reality, it is not. Many large universities operate with an earlier fall deadline and a large majority of colleges operate with a firm deadline. I believe that this change in policy will allow Dr. Ballinger's team more time to carefully consider all applicants and hand out decisions in a timely manner.
